It's been a good week for choral music nuts

It’s been a good week for those of us who are choral music nuts.

Schola Cantorum of DCPS went to Eton College Chapel on Monday and sang quite superbly. The anthem was Walton’s The Twelve, a real tour de force.

Then they sang Allegri’s Miserere Mei at Evensong on Ash Wednesday in Tewkesbury Abbey. This is one of the great classics of the choral repertoire, demanding and hugely rewarding.

The amazing thing is to realise that the choristers, who by definition are all aged from 8 to 13, are performing to the highest standard; not just a good school attempt relative to some higher level, but absolutely the top level. No-one else can do what they do and it’s a different experience once voices break and choirs are mixed. It’s a real treat to hear them: if you haven’t yet done so they are on, free to all, four days a week at 5.30 in Tewkesbury Abbey. Unmissable.
