Registered Charity No. 270751

The Choral Scholarship Fund is a registered charity which helps to fund scholarships awarded to choristers of the Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum, who, together with the lay clerks, have been singing Evensong on weekdays in the Abbey since 1973. If you have ever heard them sing amid the architectural splendours of that great Church, you will have marvelled at the standard of excellence they achieve. Unlike many cathedrals and colleges, Tewkesbury Abbey does not have any endowment for its choristers, so the Choral Scholarship Fund is essential if the tradition of Choral Evensong is to survive in the Abbey.

The main aim of the choir is to enhance worship through musical excellence that matches the visual and spiritual beauty of the Abbey. The choir has an international reputation based on its numerous recordings and its concert performances in the UK and overseas. It represented England at the closing of the French Presidency of the European Parliament in Strasbourg in December 2008 and is recognised as being among the top echelon of cathedral, collegiate and church choirs. Numerous works have been commissioned from eminent contemporary composers, and one of the choristers, Laurence Kilsby, was the 2009-10 BBC Chorister of the Year.

The Choral Scholarship Fund is entirely independent of Dean Close Preparatory School where the choristers receive a first class academic, musical and all-round education. To meet the rising cost of chorister scholarships and to secure the choir’s financial future, every effort is being made to approach trusts, charities, companies, grant-making bodies and individuals. If you feel you can contribute to the Choral Scholarship Fund, your help will be invaluable in helping to preserve the beauty of the daily worship in Tewkesbury Abbey.

To support one chorister scholarship for a year costs £4,250. However, all donations will be most welcome. These can be in the form of a monthly direct debit if you wish. We would also encourage you to take advantage of the gift aid scheme which will add 28% to your donation. Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum is a jewel in the musical life of the nation and we commend its future as a cause most worthy of your generous support.
